How to Travel on a Budget
“Travel makes you realize that no matter how much you know there is always more to learn”.
Travelling is a dream for many people but you would agree with me that the associated costs can be an obstacle. I have found that asides being intentional and coming up with a list of countries I want to explore, getting the coins required for these trips is wayyyyy more important lol but trust me, you can embark on a lot more travel adventures without draining your bank account.
In this blog, I'll share valuable tips to help you travel on a budget and make the most of your experience.
Come up with a plan
Crafting a well-thought-out travel plan is essential for any avid globetrotter. It's a way to set your travel goals in motion, envisioning the countries you wish to explore, the dates you hope to embark on your adventures, and even the estimated expenses involved. Personally, I've discovered that intentional travel begins with creating a detailed list of destinations, along with corresponding visit dates and potential costs. By doing so, you not only establish a clear sense of direction, but also pave the way for a seamless journey towards achieving your travel aspirations
Set a realistic budget
One crucial step in your travel planning process is establishing a budget and diligently saving towards it. It's essential to determine the amount you can comfortably allocate to transportation, accommodation, food, activities, and miscellaneous expenses. Conduct thorough research on the cost of living and average prices at your desired destination to gain insight into the financial requirements of your trip. This knowledge will empower you to make informed decisions throughout your journey, ensuring that you stay within your budget.
From personal experience, I highly recommend creating a dedicated account specifically for your "Travel Fund." This allows you to set aside money exclusively for your travel goals. By doing so, you cultivate a sense of financial discipline and actively contribute to making your dreams a reality.
Choose Affordable Destinations
Some destinations are naturally more budget-friendly than others. One trick is to consider countries that are closest to your own and have a lower cost of living. If you're eyeing Europe, you're in for a treat! You can hop between European countries at affordable prices, whether it's by train or air.
During the Easter holidays in April, I embarked on a trip to Vienna. While planning, I discovered the close proximity of Slovakia and decided to seize the opportunity. I booked a day trip for my friends and me to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Since we had an extra day, we spontaneously decided to visit Budapest, Hungary as well. Combining these two countries into our itinerary proved more cost-effective than planning separate trips from our individual destinations.
Be Flexible with Travel Dates
Fluctuations in travel prices can significantly impact your budget. Be flexible with your travel dates and take advantage of off-peak seasons or mid-week flights, which are usually cheaper. As much as I’m a loyalist to a particular airline, I also take advantage of great deals from other airlines using platforms like Skyscanner, Google flights, Kayak, etc to find the best deals and secure lower fares. My favorite has to be Skyscanner though because it provides some date combos for the whole year with different prices so you can select from. See illustration below.
Budget Accommodations
Accommodation is the second item that takes a huge chunk of our travel budget so it is important to look for ways to cut it down as much as possible. Instead of luxurious (5*) hotels, opt for budget-friendly accommodations like hostels, guesthouses, or homestays. Websites like Booking.com and Airbnb offer a wide range of options. Even better if you’re traveling with a friend and you choose to share a room.
Use Public Transportation… & your feet (walk a lot, if you can):
One of the remarkable aspects of visiting a new country is the opportunity to embark on walking tours from point A to point B. This mode of exploration is not only enriching, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the culture and experiences, but it also presents a budget-friendly option. However, it's worth noting that public transportation, including buses, trains, and trams, offers an equally enticing way to experience a destination like a local while keeping your expenses in check.
To make the most of your journey, it's crucial to research the public transportation options available at your chosen destination. Take the time to familiarize yourself with their schedules and fares, enabling you to navigate the city efficiently. Additionally, consider the possibility of purchasing multi-day passes or tourist cards that provide unlimited travel within a specific period. These options not only offer convenience but can also result in significant savings, allowing you to explore the destination extensively without breaking the bank.
Prioritize Free and Low-Cost Activities
No visit to a new country is complete without delving in to a myriad of activities and experience. To make the most of your adventure, do well to conduct a thorough research and plan your itinerary around free or budget-friendly activities and attractions. I use websites like Viator, Tripadvisor and GetYourGuide to find great deals. Also, many museums and cultural sites offer discounted or even free entry on certain days so do your research. Take advantage of parks, local markets, beaches and city centers for inexpensive outdoor adventures.
By curating your itinerary around these free or low-cost activities, you not only ensure a fulfilling travel experience but also keep your expense in check.
Traveling on a budget is not only possible but can also enhance your experiences by pushing you to explore and connect with a destination in a more authentic way. By setting a realistic budget, making informed choices, and embracing the local culture, you can create unforgettable memories without straining your finances.
Remember, the true value of travel lies in the experiences and connections you make, rather than the price tag attached to them. So, go forth and discover the world on a budget!
