Where my feet have taken me so far in 2023

Started off the year with a plan to travel to 4 countries by the end of the first half of the year and I can say that so far, 2023 has been an incredible year of exciting adventures and breathtaking destinations. So far, I have traveled to 8 countries (7 in Europe and 1 in the Middle East) and I wanted to take the opportunity to do a H1 check-in on the blog and share some highlights from my travels to these 8 countries, each offering its unique and unforgettable experiences.

Barcelona, Spain:

This was my second time visiting and let me tell you, Barcelona is a city that keeps giving. Honestly one of my favorite cities and on my re-visit list. Starting from the complex and magnificent Sagrada Familia to Gaudi’s house. In addition to the architectural wonders of the city, Barcelona has one of the loveliest weathers in Europe all year round. I went back last month and spent some time exploring Park Guel, walking around the beach-side in Barceloneta. Exploring the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter and taking walks around the city were among the highlights of my visit. Have you been to Barceolna before? What did you like most about your trip?

Lisbon, Portugal:

I had originally planned to visit Lisbon in December of 2022 but changed my mind last minute and decided I would rather spend the holidays with my Family in Nigeria. Lisbon holds a very special place in my heart because aside from its historic landmarks, colorful streets and beautiful neighborhood, I made a new friend - Muchen who was also solo traveling across Europe for some days. Since then, we’ve gone to form a beautiful friendship (shoutout to you Muchen).

The city of seven hills as they call it, definitely stole my heart with its breathtaking views. I spent about 4 days in Lisbon which was good enough to visit many iconic places like Arco da Augusta, Carmo convent, Belem Tower, Castle of Saint George, Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, Oceanario de lisboa and finally, riding the cable car.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take the popular tram 28  but loved my walks around the streets of Lisbon. Pro tip: make sure you wear comfortable shoes as you’d have to walk the hills which can become tiresome. Ah yes! Make sure you visit the Lisbon timeout market for both Portuguese and other cuisines.

Berlin, Germany:

This is one trip I almost didn’t make because I was so ill. I had scheduled a visa appointment in Berlin as I couldn’t find any available slots in Amsterdam so I literally dragged myself to the airport and stayed in my hotel for days till I was somewhat recovered. I was left with just one day to explore the city of Berlin (will definitely go back) and so had to make the most of it.

First I had to find a brunch spot and a few came highly recommended on tiktok. Got to one only to find out that they were fully booked so I just went into a nearby coffee shop and had hot chocolate and a croissant. Afterwards, I made various stops to see remnants of the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg gate, Holocaust memorial, Berlin Palace and Checkpoint Charlie.

Vienna, Austria:

The solo trip that eventually became a group trip with the absolute best travel buddies! I arrived in Vienna before the rest of the crew and spent some time solo hopping from one place to the next. Among other things, I quite enjoyed my time at the magnificent Kunsthistorisches Museum. The Kunsthistorisches Museum houses an extensive collection of artworks from various periods and styles, spanning over thousands of years. From ancient Egyptian artifacts to European masterpieces, every inch of the museum is just filled with the most beauti-FULL art!

Bratislava, Slovakia:

After 2 days in Vienna, we embarked on a 3 hour road trip to Bratislava, Slovakia. We had a professional guide show us around the picturesque old town, including the Bratislava castle and the Soviet style War Memorial. Slovakia is not just a country with a rich history; it is a place where the past and present converge, where ancient traditions continue to thrive alongside modern innovation. Exploring the historical landmarks, and immersing oneself in the cultural treasures of Slovakia is an experience that left a lasting impression on me. Would totally recommend making a stop whenever you visit Eastern Europe

Budapest, Hungary:

Next on this 3-in-1 country visit is Budapest!!! Our driver recommended a day in Budapest because of its proximity to Vienna. Super glad we listened. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the city’s stunning panorama. We walked a lot on this tour from walking up the stairs to the Statue of Liberty, to the Danube river and Budapest inner city. To be honest, I wish we had more time to visit some other iconic locations but I guess there’s really not much you can do on a day trip to a beautiful country with rich cultural and historical heritage.

Jordan:

I already dedicated a whole blog to my Jordan evasion. You should check it out if you’re yet to but Jordan remains my most favorable experience till date. What a great start to my Middle East tour…this journey took an adventurous turn as I explored the captivating landscapes of Jordan. I visited Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea and Jerash. Sleeping under the stars in Wadi Rum and floating effortlessly in the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea was the highlight of my Jordan trip.

Stockholm, Sweden:

I need to go back to Stockholm! Barely 12 hours here and I was already in love. The historic Gamla Stan, with its colorful buildings and narrow streets, was a delight to explore. I was in Sweden for my friend’s birthday weekend and even though I didn’t get around hopping from one place to another, Stockholm felt different from every other European city I had been to. A truly captivating city with stunning views and impeccable design.

These eight countries have gifted me with unforgettable memories, cultural discoveries, and breathtaking sights. From the architectural wonders of Barcelona and the historic charm of Vienna to the natural beauty of Jordan and the cosmopolitan vibes of Berlin, each city has left an indelible mark on my journey. As I reflect on the adventures my feet have taken me on in 2023, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore and immerse myself in the beauty of our diverse world. I have just finalized my remaining travel plans for the year and cannot wait to share my experience with you.
