3 days in Masai!

To mark the end of my stay in Rwanda, I decided to take one last trip to another East African country - Kenya - for what would be my second time visiting. I convinced Jane to travel with me and within a week we came up with a budget, bought our flight tickets and applied for a Kenyan e-visa.

We decided to spend 5 days in both Nairobi and Masai Mara but this blog is really about our experience at Masai because I’m not exactly sure how Jane and I stayed in an Airbnb close to a bus park in Nairobi. This was a case of what I ordered vs what I got so let’s leave that in the past and focus on the joy. Shall we?

We outsourced our Masai trip to a tour company Bonfire Adventures - from transportation, to accommodation, feeding, safari and hot air balloon experiences. Honestly, this was the best decision - not having to sort out any of those logistics made my life so much easier.

My experience at Masai Mara was the deliverance I didn’t know I needed so much. Everything was a hit back to back. We stayed at Jambo Mara lodge (in the middle of what I consider a jungle lol) and upon arrival we had welcome drinks, freshened up, ate late lunch and went for a night game drive.

I’ve done a daytime games drive in Rwanda so I didn’t know what to expect but mhennnn I saw so many hyenas, different types of creatures, Giraffes, Hippos, Elephants, Etc.

Jane and I had booked a hot air balloon experience - we paid about $450 each (hides face) which we regretted the moment we were told that we had to be up at 4am for pick up, else we won’t experience the sunrise at 5:30am. I looked at Jane, she looked at me and we burst out laughing. No sir, you’re joking right? Because how did we pay so much to suffer this way after our lord and saviour Jesus had paid the price for all our suffering.

Let me tell you, that hot air balloon was gooodddd!!! What did I not see with my eyes please? Is it the sun rising so beautifully or the buffalos and some other animals gathering for their early morning August meeting. It was the most amazing experience.

We spent roughly 1 hour above experiencing Masai Mara in all its glory. The moment we landed we had a buffet breakfast in the bush, connected with a few other people and soon realised that everyone except Jane & I were there on their honeymoon lol - mostly postponed due to Covid etc etc.

Once that was over, they drove us to reunite with our original tour guide & group and we began the proper games drive. I don’t know how these tour guides do it but they seemed to know where to find the ghen ghen creatures lol. We literally saw ALL the big 5, something that I tried to see all the 3 different times I visited Akagera, Rwanda but no luck. I saw Lions, Leopard, Rhino, Elephants, Bufalos, Hippos, Cheater, Etc Etc.

Ever since I visited Kenya, I’ve been preaching the gospel to anyone who wants to explore the African continent. I always recommend Kenya! I’m definitely going to go back to Kenya - they have some beautiful islands I would love to explore, including their dolphins.

Let me know if you’ve been to Kenya before and what your highlight was…looking forward to reading from you. Kisses!
